mod_ssl version 2.8    The mod_ssl package was created in April 1998. The mod_ssl module provides strong cryptography for the Apache 1.3 webserver running on different computer hardware platforms via the Secure Sockets Layer and Transport Layer Security protocols by the help of the Open Source SSL / TLS toolkit OpenSSL. This module is needed to enable Apache for SSL-Requests (https). It applies a patch to the Apache source-code and extends its Application Programming Interface.
